Engineering Design Process Summative assessment in Google Classroom

Engineering Design Process Summative assessment

Technically everyone who has completed this assignment was an engineer! Don't get to excited -- you do not have the education (typically a Bachelor degree and/or a Master degrees) to get a job -- yet! BUT you did use your knowledge to identify a problem and come up with a solution :D
But now -- there is an assessment!! This is to check how well you learned about the Engineering design process (EDP)! Remember we are using the EDP discussed in the video at the beginning of this week! As I was grading all of your work and looking at the videos ( I am not going to lie -- I got distracted by a few kittens , puppies and this insane urge to go get some ROLO'S) I somehow managed to get my notes all messed up -- so your task is to put it back in order!

Read the esay on the next page, apparently my first paragraph got all messed up. You need to put them back in order so that they make sense. Copy and pasting is the easy way to do that!
A couple of notes :
*Make sure that the definitions go with the terms!T
*The red phrases that say "Insert your idea here) .. well - that is all you -- do not copy and paste that! Replace it with a sentence that you write that makes sensethere. If it is suppose to be the first sentence -- then write the introductory sentence to go with the paragraph. if it is the conclusion sentence -- then write that. (there are a total of three -- so do them all)

NOW -- if you do not want to clean up my scrambled essay you may simply delete my words and write your own! You can write it any way that makes you feel happy to write it . You can write it as a summary of the video. You can write about how you used the EDP to complete this task. You could write about how the steps of the EDP has created all the things tha tman has used to become the dominate species on this planet!! Whatever you write about -- you need to make sure that you explain the seteps of the design process to me!

Due:

THE TIME HAS COME -- MAKE THE CAR in Google Classroom

THE TIME HAS COME -- MAKE THE CAR

EDP - Build stage and test stage
So you you have identified the need (make a "toy" car that rolls when pushed), you have researched any thing that YOU think YOU need to know -- and you have gone a gathering expedition in your home to see what it is you can use -- Draw a diagram on what you think you will build -- on this diagram you have to list the items you use for each part of the car --The key parts of the car are:
1.) CHASSIS-

2.) FRAME (BODY)-

3.) WHEEL (REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO CREATE YOUR OWN WHEEL -- IF YOU USE AN OBJECT THAT IS WHEEL FOR A DIFFERENT TOY. KIT OR GAME .... THEN IT WILL NOT COUNT -- THIS IS PROBABLY THE PART THAT REQUIRES THE MOST THINKING AND CREATIVITY)

4.) AXLE -

Now take a picture if your design! It is time to build! REMEMBER THE CRITERIA AND CONSTRAINTS!! BUILD THE CAR WITH THOSE THINGS IN MIND!

After you build your car - take a video of the car rolling and attach it to the document below or email it to me! YOU HAVE TWO ITEMS TO SEND ME
1.) YOUR PICTURE OF THE DESIGN WITH THE PARTS LABELED,
2.) YOUR VIDEO OF THE CAR WORKING

This question has already been asked so I will post the response here:
Question: "can i draw the car on the computer"
Response : As long as you can label it and send me the file ---YES!!

DO NOT THROW THIS CAR AWAY -- WE WILL USE IT NEXT WEEK FOR OUR FINAL LESSON OF THE YEAR!!

Engineering Design Process in Google Classroom

Engineering Design Process

This week you are going to have to design an object that meets certain CRITERIA , but there are also some CONSTRAINTS ! You will have two days to prepare -- First check out this super cool video made by high school students about the Engineering Design Process (EDP). You can always research the ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS -- but beware -- there are several different versions of the design process -- they all achieve the same goal -- but they are explained in different ways and for the purpose of this lesson we will use this version of the EDP. Then open the DESIGN BRIEF) and complete those items -- this is only the planning stage -- YOU HAVE 3 DAYS!!

DESIGN, FLY AND OBSERVE YOUR BOBBY FLYERS!! in Google Classroom

DESIGN, FLY AND OBSERVE YOUR BOBBY FLYERS!!

By now you should have watched the video and seen the two girls make and "FLY" (DROP) their Bobby Flyers. The video walks through the steps they took to create a design, then drop it. They actually dropped two different designs at one time and then decided to take additional steps to improve the Bobby Flyer's flights and landings. So today you have three tasks;
1.) FIRST MAKE THE FAST FALLER (THIS IS WHAT SCIENTISTS AND DESIGNERS LIKE TO CALL THE CONTROL -- THIS IS THE WORST WAY FOR "BOBBY" TO TRAVEL -- IT IS FAST AND WHEN IT LANDS, IT LANDS HARD!
2.) NOW MAKE 1 OF THE 2 BOBBY FLYER DESIGNS MADE BY THE GIRLS ON THE VIDEO -- YOU GET DECIDE WHICH ONE YOU WANT TO MAKE! THIS IS YOUR PRACTICE FLYER .
3.) DESIGN YOUR FLYERS TO INCREASE THE LENGTH OF TIME THAT "BOBBY" IS IN THE AIR AND SOFTEN THE IMPACT THAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE FLYER HITS THE GROUND!
4.) NOW LOOK AT THE WORKSHEET ATTACHED ( IT IS A GOOGLE SLIDE DOCUMENT) -- IT SHOWS YOU THE TYPE OF INFORMATION I WOULD LIKE TO FOR YOU TO GATHER. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EDIT IT -- BUT YOU CAN GIVE ME THE SAME INFORMATION ON THE SECOND ATTACHMENT JUST FILL IN THE TABLE ON THE GOOGLE DOC!! I HAVE STARTED TO FILL IT OUT (ON THE FAST FALLER) JUST FOLLOW MY EXAMPLE WHEN YOU BUILD THE NEXT THREE.

Due:

THE BOBBY FLYER in Google Classroom

THE BOBBY FLYER

SO WE ARE GOING TO TRY AND DO ANOTHER PROJECT -- DAY ONE WILL BE YOU WATCHING THE VIDEO AND REALIZING THAT SINCE WE ARE NOT IN THE CLASSROOM YOU HAVE TO MAKE SOME LITTLE ADJUSTMENTS,
THE FIRST ADJUSTMENT WILL POSSIBLY BE THE "BOBBY PIN" YOU CAN USE A PAPER CLIP (I think the small paper clip is best). The second adjustment is the second person -- you can always ask a sibling or parent to play the role -- I would allow them to be the person who drops your flyer designs. Because you will need to be able to describe how the flyer "fell". THE THIRD ADJUSTMENT WILL BE ON HOW YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE DESIGNS (if we were in the same class -- you would be able to just show me -- IF YOU HAVE A PHONE OR TABLET THAT YOU CAN TAKE A PICTURE WITH THEN TAKE A PICTURE AND SUBMIT THOSE!! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT THEN YOU HAVE TO DESCRIBE IT TO ME! THE DESCRIPTION NEEDS TO BE STEP BY STEP USING MEASUREMENTS.

I AM ATTACHING ALL OF THE GOOGLE DOCS THAT YOU WILL BE USING ON SEPARATE ASSIGNMENTS TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THIS PROJECT IS A WEEK LONG PROJECT -- IT WILL NOT TAKE YOU TO LONG TO DO IT -- THE TIME WILL COME IN FOR THE PLANNING AND WRITING -- DO NOT TRY AND RUSH THROUGH THIS!!

REMEMBER TODAY'S ASSIGNMENT IS WATCHING THE VIDEO AND GATHERING THE SUPPLIES -- YOU WILL FIND THE VIDEO LINK ON THE BACKGROUND DOCUMENT -- WHEN YOU HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO, GATHERED YOUR SUPPLIES -- YOU WILL TURN IN THE CHECK LIST DOCUMENT!

Due:

DID YOU CHECK YOUR EMAIL TODAY? in Google Classroom

DID YOU CHECK YOUR EMAIL TODAY?

YOU WILL NEED TO SEND ME AN EMAIL FROM YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL ACCOUNT --
GOOD NEWS YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORDS ARE THE SAME AS YOUR GOOGLE CLASSROOM INFORMATION. YOU ALSO USE THE CLASSLINK PORTAL TO GET TO YOUR EMAIL :D
IF YOU HAVE HAD TEACHERS IN THE PAST WHO HAVE BEEN USING THINGS LIKE GOOGLE CLASSROOM, THEN YOU WILL HAVE A TON OF OLD EMAILS. HOW YOU HANDLE YOU BACK LOG OF EMAILS IS UP TO YOU! I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING THE EMAIL ( AT LEAST FOR MY CLASS) FROM HERE ON OUT)

YOUR GRADE IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE EMAILED ME AND THAT THE SUBJECT OF YOUR EMAIL IS YOUR CLASS NUMBER --

THE GOOGLE DOC THAT IS ATTACHED HAS A QUICK TUTORIAL ON HOW TO CHECK YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL ACCOUNT --SINCE THERE IS NOTHING TO TURN IN, SIMPLY MARK IT AS TURNED IN --AFTER YOU HAVE EMAILED ME !!

Due:

Answer the questions on the attached Google document labeled FORCES OF FLIGHT SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT!!

YOU MUST USE COMPLETE SENTENCES __ AND USE THE DATA IN YOUR CHART AND YOUR PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWERS!!

Due:

Making and flying your planes!! Don't forget you will also be recording your data that you gather about your paper plane flights!! in Google Classroom

Making and flying your planes!! Don't forget you will also be recording your data that you gather about your paper plane flights!!

This assignment is designed to be a project that is a week long. You may need longer time to read the instructions -- please take that time -- but without the distractions and interruptions that are common in our classroom; you can also complete some of these steps at your own pace which maybe faster than the normal classroom pace. Your instructions are on the attached google document -- Be very careful of the DUE DATE!! There is a SUMMATIVE assignment that will require you to have the data from the flights. If you do not have a tape measure that is several feet long you could create your own by taking rope or yarn and tie knots to mark each foot to make things easier.

Due:

Forces of flight assignment in Google Classroom

Forces of flight assignment

You will find terms to define and questions to answer -- please pay attention to the fact that I want your work to be thorough.. do not rush through this -- It is much faster to do it right the first time then have to do it over a second time :D
